India is a chocolate crazy nation and we all seem to be in love with chocolate cakes. Extremely popular among kids and adults, I haven’t met a person till date who doesn’t like chocolate. A chocolatey cake, the one that melts into the mouth makes us grin from ear to ear. 🙂
The definition of chocolate cakes has changed over a period of time. According to the Food Timeline, in the first quarter of the 19th century, chocolate cake was a yellow or spiced cake meant to accompany a chocolate beverage. In the second quarter of the 19th century a chocolate cake was either a white or yellow cake with chocolate icing. By the second half of the 19th century, chocolate was being used as an ingredient in cakes and cookies. And, at the turn of the 20th century chocolate cakes were baked the way we know them today.
There are a lot of variations of the delicious chocolate cake, the most popular are listed below.
Chocolate cake– A cake with chocolate in it. The more the better as we like loads of it. Chocolate cakes are usually layered and frosted with chocolate ganache. The chocolate cake can also be flavoured with spices, hazelnut, or with expresso coffee for coffee lovers. It can also be layered with raspberry or strawberries.
Chocolate mocha cake and chocolate orange cake are also liked by many.
Chocolate Lava cake has the liquid chocolate oozing out when sliced. It is divinely rich and absolutely decadent.
Chocolate cakes & alcohol are a great combination and is also catching up these days with its counterparts. The Chocolate Whiskey cake is to die for. Chocolate cakes can also be paired with red wine, Kahlua to give it a slight boozy taste.
Red Velvet Cake – Yes it is a chocolate cake too, but a velvetty one. The velvet texture is due to buttermilk and the red comes from beetroot or other coloring agents. It is frosted with lip smacking cream cheese frosting. This cake is quite high up the popularity charts of youngsters.
